Colleagues,

At the outset, I would like to thank the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in its capacity as the Chair of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement (CoB-NAM) for convening this important meeting today.

I would like to thank Ambassador Cuesta, Permanent Representative of the Mission of the Republic of Cuba for his briefing about the latest situation in Cuba.

Colleagues,

We follow closely the ongoing situation in Cuba and firmly believe that the Cuban people, with their revolutionary tradition and unyielding spirit over the past decades, will soon overcome the current economic difficulties and impacts of the pandemic.

Viet Nam's consistent policy is to oppose any imposition of unilateral embargoes and coercive measures on a sovereign State. We share the view that the continuation of the embargo against Cuba is unjustifiable. It has inflicted enormous damages to all sectors of the Cuban economy and untold hardship, including the current situation, for generations of the Cuban people.

We, therefore, call on the United States to implement Resolution A/RES/75/289 adopted on 23 June 2021 to put an end to its unilateral embargo against Cuba, so that Cuba may be free to participate equitably and fairly in economic and trading relations in accordance with international law. We urge the United States Government to reverse its current policy trend toward Cuba, not only for the benefits of the people of the two countries but also for peace, stability and development in the region and the world at large.

We also urge the international community to stand with the Cuban people in this difficult time. The country is now in urgent need of financial resources and other assistance in kind to overcome the current challenges. Solidarity will certainly win.

Colleague,

For more than 60 years of our historic relationship and friendship, Viet Nam has always attached great importance to the relation with Cuba. We reiterate our strong and continued support, cooperation, and solidarity with the brotherly people of Cuba, and renew our unwavering commitment to safeguarding the principles of international laws as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

I thank you!
